First-time homebuyers took the gold medal in overcoming hurdles to homeownership in 2023. USMI has continued to be busy advocating for policies that promote access and affordability for homebuyers and safety and soundness for the housing finance system. The association recently published its annual report on mortgage financing supported by the private mortgage insurance (MI) industry at the national and state levels and issued a press release on the updated guidance to the Private Mortgage Insurer Eligibility Requirements (PMIERs) provided by the government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs), Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, under the oversight of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). USMI named Enact Holdings, Inc. President and CEO Rohit Gupta as its new Chairman of the Board, applauded the formation of the new Bipartisan Congressional Real Estate Caucus, and USMI President Seth Appleton spoke at the Bipartisan Policy Center’s 2024 Summit on Housing Supply Solutions. USMI commented on Freddie Mac’s Purchase of Single-Family Closed-End Second Mortgages Proposed Product, FHFA’s release of VantageScore historical credit score data, and FHFA’s new definition for “First-Generation Homebuyers.” Read further about these developments and more below.
